Description

“Riveting, heart-wrenching, and full of Old Hollywood glamour, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is one of the most captivating reads of 2017.” —BuzzFeed

“The epic adventures Evelyn creates over the course of a lifetime will leave every reader mesmerized. This wildly addictive journey of a reclusive Hollywood starlet and her tumultuous Tinseltown journey comes with unexpected twists and the most satisfying of drama.” —PopSugar

From the author of Daisy Jones & The Six—an entrancing novel “that speaks to the Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor in us all” (Kirkus Reviews), in which a legendary film actress reflects on her relentless rise to the top and the risks she took, the loves she lost, and the long-held secrets the public could never imagine.

Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now?

Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband has left her, and her professional life is going nowhere. Regardless of why Evelyn has selected her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career.

Summoned to Evelyn’s luxurious apartment, Monique listens in fascination as the actress tells her story. From making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the ‘80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way, Evelyn unspools a tale of ruthless ambition, unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love. Monique begins to feel a very real connection to the legendary star, but as Evelyn’s story near its conclusion, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways.

“Heartbreaking, yet beautiful” (Jamie Blynn, Us Weekly), The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is “Tinseltown drama at its finest” (Redbook): a mesmerizing journey through the splendor of old Hollywood into the harsh realities of the present day as two women struggle with what it means—and what it costs—to face the truth.

This book had me from beginning to end. It delivered a raw reality of fame and life’s trade offs. Evelyn Hugo is the embodiment of a woman who is self aware of her power and her weakness. What beautifully written piece.

I fell in love with the characters, the storyline and even shed a few tears at the end. A story of love, loss and just how different things look from the outside looking in. Highly recommend!

I loved this book so much. I loved all the characters and especially the complexity of Evelyn. I found myself both loving and disliking her at the same time, but always wanting more from her. The love Evelyn has for her family brought me to tears so many times while reading this. This book did what a great book should do: it made me think and feel very deeply. It also made me laugh, cry, and hope for the characters. It’s one of those books that once you finish and have to put away, it genuinely makes you sad and wish there was more. The central love story is one that has you captivated throughout the book. The pure and undying love between Evelyn and her beloved was heartbreaking and so precious at the same time. I find myself wishing Evelyn Hugo was a real person so that I could go and watch her movies. The themes of life, love, fame, the truth, the pursuit of happiness, & death were all central to this story. All in all, I completely loved this book and I love Evelyn & Celia so much. I have already recommended it to my mom and a good friend :)

I’ve read a number of books by this author and have enjoyed them all. This one was also very good, but I wasn’t prepared for the big dose of lesbian/homosexual love story. I have nothing against the gay community, but I don’t really enjoy reading about women having sex with women. Other than that it’s an engrossing read.

Fascinating read, so Hollywood, loved the story and surprised with the ending. I really thought she would turn and go back so Evelyn would not be alone. I think I would have liked my ending better.
