Description

A 2018 Goodreads Choice Award Finalist—Top 5 Best Mystery & Thriller * A Suspense Magazine “Best of 2018” Thriller/Suspense Pick

“An acutely observed family drama with bone-chilling suspense.” —People

“Jewell teases out her twisty plot at just the right pace, leaving readers on the edge of their seats. Her multilayered characters are sheer perfection, and even the most astute thriller reader won’t see where everything is going until the final threads are unknotted.” —Booklist, starred review

“Sharply written with twists and turns, Jewell’s latest will please fans of Gone Girl, The Girl on the Train, or Luckiest Girl Alive." —Library Journal

Ellie Mack was the perfect daughter. She was fifteen, the youngest of three. She was beloved by her parents, friends, and teachers. She and her boyfriend made a teenaged golden couple. She was days away from an idyllic post-exams summer vacation, with her whole life ahead of her.

And then she was gone.

Now, her mother Laurel Mack is trying to put her life back together. It’s been ten years since her daughter disappeared, seven years since her marriage ended, and only months since the last clue in Ellie’s case was unearthed. So when she meets an unexpectedly charming man in a café, no one is more surprised than Laurel at how quickly their flirtation develops into something deeper. Before she knows it, she’s meeting Floyd’s daughters—and his youngest, Poppy, takes Laurel’s breath away.

Because looking at Poppy is like looking at Ellie. And now, the unanswered questions she’s tried so hard to put to rest begin to haunt Laurel anew. Where did Ellie go? Did she really run away from home, as the police have long suspected, or was there a more sinister reason for her disappearance? Who is Floyd, really? And why does his daughter remind Laurel so viscerally of her own missing girl?

Reviews

  • An interesting take on a relatively tired theme.

There are better versions of this story out there, but for what it is the novel held my attention and gave a slightly different take on the theme. I didn’t find myself especially invested in any of the characters and felt like some areas were a bit empty. The main character’s relationship with her adult children fall into this category. While this seems like an important angle to the protagonist’s perspective on events, it was mostly unexplored. All in all, a worthwhile read if you keep your expectations in check.

I love this book. It might be a favorite of mine. It made me happy, then sad, and it made me feel everything each character was feeling. I cried of happiness once and then cried from feeling sad for the characters. Great book!

Read this book straight through. At times it was confusing, but I would recommend this book. Lisa Jewel is a brilliant writer. Have enjoyed her other books.

From the minute i started this book i couldn’t put it down. This is my second book i’ve read by Jewell (first was girls in the garden which i loved also) and the fast paced writing had me turning the pages even faster! It’s a thriller that will tug at your heart and have you on the edge of your seat. Can’t wait to read a third by this author. Wish they would make a movie out of this one.

I have not finished this book but it seems really good I wish that people who left reviews would not write “spoilers” ....if you want to leave write a review just say if you like the book or not and why..... don’t put things in your review about events that happen in the book that ruins it for the rest of us who have not read the book!
